The ALW SP2000

Sp2000

The Australian LightWing's sleek body and flying surfaces have been designed with style, class and exceptional aerodynamics in mind. From the performance-enhancing body curves to our Australian LightWing tail section. The Australian LightWing is completely Australian made, with complete backup, friendly service and quick repair. The Hughes Group has been manufacturing aircraft for twenty six strong years and boasts an impeccable safety record in the Australian aviation industry.

The SPEED is available in various configurations, from the lightweight RA-Aus registerable SP2000S (nose wheel or tail wheel) 4-seat SP4000(nose wheel only) and the SP6000 six seat aircraft.

Safety is the prominent feature in our airframe and aircraft design. We offer the highest quality in our components, service and accessories.

The track record of our aircraft and design principles go back 24 years, and our record is near-perfect in terms of serious accidents. Sure, you could say that perhaps only conservative pilots fly Australian LightWing aircraft, but the way we design and build our aircraft definitely contributes to our record. The combination of aluminium wings and a welded steel safety frame that encloses the pilots in a protective cocoon is unmatched in the industry. In both the SP2000 and SP4000 both you and your passengers are surrounded by an ultra strong and fully welded steel safety frame, providing roll-over protection and an ultra rigid aerodynamic platform that is capable of loads way beyond that which you will experience in flight. 4 Point seat belts come standard with our aircraft.

We can customize your paint job to suit your wildest desires.

Why Purchase an Australian LightWing SP2000?

Safety is our Prominent Feature

In both the SP2000 and the SP4000 both the pilot and the passengers are surrounded by an ultra strong and fully welded steel safety frame, providing roll-over protection and an ultra rigid aerodynamic platform that is capable of loads way beyond that which you will experience in flight.

The track record of our aircraft and design principles go back 24 years and our record is near perfect in terms of serious accidents. The combination of aluminium wings and a welded steel frame that encloses the pilots in a protective cocoon is unmatched in the industry.

Four point seat belts come standard with our aircraft.

From it's inception Australian LightWing has set the standard in style, safety and economy.

Performance and Flight Handling

The SP2000 is stable and easy to fly. Our two thirds span wing flaps are highly effective and allow easy directional control, particularly in cross wind landings. When the wind is blowing across the strip a low wing is easier to manage as the aircraft has a lower centre of drag.

The SP2000 cruises at 118 knots at 75% power with a solid rate of climb of 750ft per min. The cockpit layout has been optimised for Flight Training, the elevator and aileron side sticks are separate for student and teacher and though the throttle and trim are common, there will be no need for the instructor to touch the student's hands during most flight training exercises.

Both the pilot and co-pilot seats are adjustable and optionally, rudder pedals are adjustable as well. This makes it possible to safely and comfortably operate the aircraft controls without the use of pillows and cushions. The control sticks can be adjusted 50mm fore and aft, though this customisation is spanner adjustable.

Service and Style

The SP-2000 is stylish, state-of-the-art and attractive, and if aircraft look good, they generally fly well. The SP-2000 body is sleek and aerodynamically clean, resulting in less power being used to propel the aircraft, resulting in less fuel burn (15 to 18L/hr), longer range and lower operating costs. The SP-2000 will comfortably maintain altitude at 70kts.

We are Australian, no need to elaborate on that one - faster service, much faster service.

Nick Hughes maintains the fastest backup and parts service possible; we make the parts onsite so it's simply not possible to be out of stock of any parts, small or large. Visit our Home Builders Supplies page here.

"Buying Australian" needs to be taught at school if we are to build our Aussie technology base. I don’t believe there is a LightWing internet support group, a sound indication that factory support is 100% effective.

Documentation, our service and flight manuals, make maintenance simple and straight forward.

The Hughes Engineering Company has over 30 years of sound local trading with AAA credit rating and hundreds of happy clients.

ALW SP2000 Construction

The Australian LightWing ~ Wing Section

Wing Construction: 6061T6 high tensile alluminium frame. Underside outboard panels 2.5Oz Ceconite. Control surfaces GRP laminated mass-balanced ailerons, elevators and rudder. See also Specifications for the High Wing Tapis

Our large, square plan wings use wing section NACA23013. This wing section combined with our smooth and clean airframe gives you, the pilot, the ultimate in efficiency. As an example, using 4100RPM and 25 inches manifold pressure, the SP-2000 will maintain altitude at 65kts using only about 30hp. This is amazing to see in flight. Apply power and the air speed rapidly reaches cruise speed in a matter of seconds. See our free SPEED DVD for an in-flight demonstration of this.

With a wingspan of only 28 feet, (28') the square plan wings have an inbuilt anti-stall feature that keeps the wing tips flying right up to the stall. The obvious difference between a high wing and a low wing is that the wings are closer to the ground, so, on landing, the large flaps are more effective; the aircraft can slow right down and the effect of crosswinds is much less pronounced. Although they're comparatively short, the wings on the SP-2000 provide excellent stability in the air and on the runway.

Wing tips: GRP laminate, optional strobe lights (Price approx. $1000).

Undercarriage

The standard tyres on our aircraft are 15 inch (15”) on 6 x 6" rims, (OR optionally 13 inch on 5" x 5" rims) the Air Trac tyres grip the runway and provide differential steering with powerful 8 inch hydraulic disk brakes - this means they're big and rugged and can handle rough or bush strips with ease. The castering nose wheel means the SP-2000 can be spun on one wheel and makes manoeuvring the aircraft in your hangar very easy.

Fuselage Construction: Welded lightweight steel fuselage with semi-structural GRP skin, heat formed polycarbonate windows, underside of fuselage: forward area GRP laminate skin , rear 2.5 ounce ceconite.

Fuselage

Spinner: 13" diameter GRP laminate.
